Traditional note taking includes features processed by both hemispheres. However, its format – consisting mainly of words, linearity, sequence, black on white – stimulates more the left hemisphere. This explains why the following problems are often experienced when using linear note taking: concentration trouble, lack of creativity, blank memory, difficulties to see how things connect or losing the overview. This also explains why so many people make small drawings during meetings or courses. Drawing actually enables them to remain connected to the rather ‘left hemisphere’ format of most meetings.
Since the Mind Map integrates features processed by both the left (words, details, analysis…) and right hemispheres (colours, images, fantasy, association…); it allows the brain to better focus on the information. Furthermore, it stimulates associative thinking to bring up more creative ideas.
